Irina Blok designed the Android robot in 2007 while working on the identity for Google's unannounced mobile operating system. Her stated starting point was not science fiction but the restroom pictogram, on the logic that a figure built from a dome, a rectangle and four capsules reads the same anywhere in the world. Google then released the design under a Creative Commons licence, so anyone could modify, print or sell it without asking. That is close to unheard of for a corporate mascot, and it is the whole reason the robot became shorthand for open source itself. Blok's own account of what followed: "It just became this viral movement on its own. The next thing I knew, there were all kinds of robots." Google leaned in at home too, lining the Mountain View lawn with dessert statues, one per version name from Cupcake to Pie. The character was cut down to a head in 2019 and went glossy 3D in 2023, but the 2007 decision to let go of control is why it outlasted almost every other tech mascot of its era.
