Duke is the mascot of Java, a waving triangular fellow with a red nose, designed by Joe Palrang in 1992 for Sun’s Green Project, where he lived inside an experimental handheld device as an on-screen agent before Java the language even had its name. Palrang went on to work on Shrek; Duke went on to wave at programmers for three decades. Sun open-sourced the artwork under a BSD license in 2006, making Duke one of the only corporate mascots you are formally licensed to redraw, and the community does, constantly.
