The Celebration Creatures
The unicorn began as an April Fools joke. An Asana engineer made a purple unicorn fly across the screen when you completed a task, purely to put some fanfare into a to-do list. People loved it enough that it stayed, and in 2016 Asana gave it a full cast, a narwhal, a yeti and a phoenix, with an otter added later, each flying in from a corner with its own trail and its own one-line personality. The design brief across all five is restraint: acknowledge the win, deliver about a second of delight, then get out of the way so people can keep working. Asana redesigned the whole family in 2023 and even spun the narwhal off as the logo for its internal soccer team. Proof that the highest-value mascot work is sometimes a one-second animation nobody asked for.
