the LangChain parrot
LangChain launched in October 2022 as an open source project, and its earliest README simply read parrot, chain link, LangChain, both stock Apple emoji typed into the markdown. The joke had teeth: researchers had started calling large language models stochastic parrots, good at mimicking language without understanding it, and LangChain's whole purpose was chaining those parrots into something useful. The emoji then became the actual brand, sitting on the GitHub org avatar, the homepage and the PyPI listing while the company raised tens of millions and turned into one of the most used tools in AI development. LangChain eventually commissioned a proper identity, an abstract geometric bird, but visit the PyPI page today and the two emoji are still there. The AI era's house style was to skip the designer, and this is the clearest artifact of it.
