Wilber

Wilber turned up on 25 September 1997, drawn by Tuomas Kuosmanen, who goes by tigert, and he has been GIMP's face ever since. What the project built around him is very telling. Instead of a bible or a personality guide, GIMP shipped the Wilber Construction Kit, an XCF file in the source tree full of hats and accessories that developers kept adding to, a hard hat from Simon Budig, a wizard cap from Raphael Quinet. The mascot as layered file. Ask what he is and the official answer is that he is a GIMP, his own species, which lets everyone keep arguing about whether he is a dog, a wolf, a cat or a fox. In 2021 Aryeom and Jehan started drawing him as a full character with a body, a backpack and a graphics tablet, hiking above a valley, which is the closest he has come to a world. GIMP 3.0 shipped in 2025 with a flatter Wilber by Aryeom Han, and the shape survived the flattening cleanly, which is the real test. Somebody once cut and folded him out of paper and stood him next to a Tux plush. Twenty-eight years in, that is still what deployment looks like here.
